One of a Kind: The Rise and Fall of Stuey
-Combination biography and autobiography about poker legend Stu Ungar
-Excellent account of poker's most tragic character
Review
"Even though Stuey Ungar was perhaps the greatest poker player ever to live, his talent at card playing wasn't close to being his most compelling characteristic. Stuey was a little bit of a gangster, genius, madman, tragic hero, and cardsharp. Add it all up, as Dalla and Alson have done in captivating style, and you get one of the most unusual characters to ever appear on the Vegas scene." --Andy Bellin, author of Poker Nation.
Stu Ungar is the antithesis of someone like Daniel Negreanu or Erick Lindgren, at least in appearance and virtue. Quiet, private, scrawny, filled with personal demons, and never looking much older than 14, Stu Ungar led both one of the most triumphant and sad lives in the poker world. He was never the poster-boy for poker nor did he ever wish to be. The early '80s, Ungar's glory days, also couldn't be more different than popular poker today. However, in spite of his personal issues and drug addictions, he was probably the most talented poker and gin player to ever grace the felt. Sadly, we'll never get to know how truly great Ungar could have been because of those addictions.
Overall, this biography gives you everything you could want to know about Stuey Ungar, his life story, and the ups and downs of his poker career. If you're in the mood for a serious book about one of the darker legends of poker, I highly recommend One of a Kind.

Doyle Brunson's Super System: A Course in Power Poker
Review
-It was believed by many people that Brunson and his colleagues simply gave too much information away, allowing poker amateurs to catch up to the experts. Over time, however, this book has become regarded as one of the best poker books ever written to serve the poker industry. When this was first published in the seventies it caused a sensation. Immediately recognized as the most ambitious poker book ever written, it nonetheless was received with irritation by some professionals because it was believed that Doyle "Texas Dolly" Brunson and his collaborators gave away too much, thereby allowing the amateurs to catch up, thereby cutting into the professional player's take.

Play Poker like the Pros: Most people today misunderstand poker...
- "Phil Hellmuth gave me the best poker lesson I've ever received." (Matt Damon, actor and co-star in the movie Rounders )
Review
Hellmuth is to poker players what Tiger Woods is to golfers. As the introduction stresses, this is not a book to be perused casually; rather, you read it like a textbook, a training manual for effective poker playing, at both beginning and advanced levels. Hellmuth details card combinations and analyzes situations with the precision of a surgeon. What's unique here is the breadth of coverage, focusing not only on traditional table play but also on online gaming.
Hellmuth, a seven time world champion, and all around smart guy, provides a book that assumes the reader knows nothing about poker. The basics are explained with clarity. Then Phil discusses the math, game theory, and strategy in various poker games with an emphasis on Hold 'Em, the most complex (most interesting) and most popular form of tournament and casino poker. If you're already an Eagle (Phil classifies players according to type, such as the Mouse, the Elephant, the Jackal, etc. Eagles are birds capable of feathering their nests with millions of dollars from poker) this would be an interesting book for the insight it provides into the mind of another certified Eagle. If you're a beginner or intermediate with Eaglelike aspirations, this is the best primer around. It's not the only book you'll need to read, but it will teach you the language and strategies of poker. Then the manuals written for advanced players will make sense and you'll gain much more from them than if you just jumped in to one of them. One caveat: before you jump into a game for real money, finish the book. Don't get fired up after a chapter or two and hit the poker room at the Bellagio expecting to clean up. In poker, a little knowledge is a dangerous thing. FINISH THE BOOK before you open your wallet.

Sit 'n Go Strategy: Expert Advice For Beating One-Table Tournaments
By Collin Moshman Sit n go poker tournaments are one table events starting with nine or ten players that usually pay the top three places. They are not standard no-limit poker tournaments since the required strategy to be successful is different, and those who understand the proper approach have found these events to be highly profitable. This text, written by sit n go expert Collin Moshman, is the first poker strategy book devoted exclusively to these tournaments.
Sit `N Go Strategy is one of the best poker manuscripts ever published, and a major contribution to poker, as there has been relatively little literature on SNG tournament strategy. It is a well written, fairly comprehensive guide to playing low and medium buy in, one table tournaments. Sit 'n Go Strategy is logically divided into sections on Low Blind Play, Medium Blind Play, and High Blind Play, as well as a chapter, titled Sit `N Go Career Play which covers some additional concepts.

No. It is a series of established approaches and behaviors that enables these experts to bring their "A" game to the table session after session, regardless of short-term results. Caro's Book of Poker Tells By Mike Caro and Matthew Hilger
Mike Caro aka "Madman" is always fun to watch at the poker table. His book is one of the absolute classics that must be in any serious poker players collection. It focuses on the psychology of poker - observation skills are paramount.
This book is in many ways one of a kind. It focuses on the complex and imprecise science of reading other poker players' tells and it does it so well that no other serious books have been written to address this aspect of poker play..
The book is ordered into types of poker tells with examples of the specific tells. The analysis is thougrough and still current even though the original edition was published some years ago. You will be hard pressed to find any other works solely on the topic of poker tells, and some of the best poker books ever published make reference to this milestone work.
In our opinion the book is a must read. You cannot read it lightly however, it must be read in great detail and you have to do a lot of thinking about the tells and how to actually get any real value from it. Tells are rarely obvious and it takes concentration to find them. And remember – even if you spot a tell your opponent might be faking it, trying to lure you in to a trap.
